Gate 17: Opinions

Following · Ajna Center

The gate of opinions — the logical mind that forms opinions and mental frameworks. This energy organizes data into patterns and shares opinions, but these opinions must be invited and tested before they become valuable.

The six lines of Gate 17

Every gate expresses through six lines — the universal line quality coloured by this gate's specific energy. These are the line-level interpretations most apps reserve for paid readings.

Line 17.1 · Opinions grounded in study

Your opinions only carry weight when they rest on real homework — facts gathered, patterns examined, the logic tested in private first. Built on that foundation, what you offer organizes understanding for others; voiced before you've done the groundwork, it collapses the moment someone asks how you know.

Line 17.2 · The natural seer of patterns

You have an innate eye for how things logically fit, often without noticing you're doing it. This clarity surfaces best when you're left alone with a question rather than put on the spot. The right person asking the right way draws the insight out; demand it on cue and your mind goes blank.

Line 17.3 · Opinions tested by being wrong

You refine your views by stating them, watching them fail, and adjusting — each mistaken conclusion sharpening the next. Being wrong isn't a flaw in your logic but how it matures. The opinions you eventually stand behind are durable precisely because you've already broken the weak ones yourself.

Line 17.4 · Opinions shared through trust

Your way of organizing understanding lands when it's offered to people who already know and value how you think. Within that circle your viewpoint shapes the conversation; broadcast cold to strangers or pushed on the unreceptive, the same well-reasoned opinion gets dismissed before it's heard.

Line 17.5 · The opinion people lean on

Others look to you for the clear, practical read on a situation, and that expectation can make you influential or expose you. When your logic genuinely answers the need, you're trusted as the voice of sense; when it overreaches or misses, the same crowd turns on the verdict — so let your opinions stay honest about their limits.

Line 17.6 · Opinions become considered wisdom

Over time your opinions ripen from quick takes into measured judgment others come to rely on. Early on you may overstate things and have to walk them back; later you weigh before you speak. Eventually your perspective carries authority not because you're loud or always right, but because it has been earned and reliably fair.

The I Ching — Hexagram 17, Following

Gate 17 is built directly on this hexagram — the ancient oracle Human Design grew out of.

Following brings the highest success, and it holds firm when your devotion stays correct rather than convenient — there is no fault in giving yourself to what is genuinely worthy. The Image shows thunder fallen quiet within the lake: the active force has settled into rest as night comes on. In the same spirit, the wise person withdraws indoors at nightfall to recover, knowing that the strength to lead well begins with knowing when to yield.

Line 17.1

What you follow is shifting, and that change is sound if you hold to what is right. Don't seal yourself off — step beyond your familiar circle and meet people on open ground, and these fresh connections will bear fruit.

Line 17.2

Cling to the small, near attachment and you let slip the strong and worthy one. You cannot hold both, so weigh carefully which you bind yourself to.

Line 17.3

Hold to the strong and worthy and release the lesser attachment, and your following finds what it seeks. Stay steady and correct on this higher course, and it serves you.

Line 17.4

Drawing a following to yourself may look like success, yet pressing it for your own gain ends badly. Keep your conduct sincere and your way plain to all, and where then is the fault?

Line 17.5

Be wholehearted toward what is genuinely good. Commit yourself to the excellent and true, and the outcome is fortunate.

Line 17.6

Here allegiance has grown so firm it binds completely, loyalty held fast and tied tight. Such devotion is honored at the highest level — as a king presents the faithful one with offerings on the sacred mountain.

The Gene Keys — Gene Key 17

In the Gene Keys, the same energy runs a spectrum: Shadow Opinion → Gift Far-Sightedness → Siddhi Omniscience.

The Shadow of Opinion shows up as a mind in a hurry to be right, mistaking its narrow snapshot of reality for the whole picture and clinging to conclusions long before the full pattern has revealed itself. As that restless certainty relaxes, it ripens into the Gift of Far-Sightedness — a clear, patterned way of seeing that perceives where things are actually heading — and at its highest unfolds into the Siddhi of Omniscience, where the separate observer dissolves and knowing arises whole, without anyone left to hold an opinion at all.
