Gate 29: Perseverance
The gate of perseverance — the sacral energy of saying yes and committing fully. This is the power of devotion and the ability to see things through. The key is being selective about what you commit to.
The six lines of Gate 29
Every gate expresses through six lines — the universal line quality coloured by this gate's specific energy. These are the line-level interpretations most apps reserve for paid readings.
Line 29.1 · A yes that stands on ground
Before you commit, your devotion needs solid footing — a clear, studied sense of what you're actually agreeing to and what it will ask of you. When that groundwork is done, your perseverance carries others through anything; rush the yes without it, and the commitment buckles the moment things get hard.
Line 29.2 · Devotion that has to be called
Wholehearted commitment comes naturally to you, often before you've consciously weighed it. It serves you best when the right thing genuinely calls and you answer in your own time; pulled in by others or pressured to commit on demand, that easy yes curdles into draining obligation you can't sustain.
Line 29.3 · Learning where devotion belongs
You discover what deserves your commitment by saying yes to too much and feeling the cost firsthand. Each one that didn't fit shows you where your real perseverance lives. The exhaustion isn't failure — it's how you learn which depths are worth diving into and which to climb back out of.
Line 29.4 · Devotion anchored in bonds
Your wholehearted commitment thrives when it's rooted in real relationships — the people you've chosen and who've chosen you. You persevere for what you love, not for abstractions. Bound to the right circle, your devotion is unshakable; spent on strangers or cold causes, it leaks away with nothing to hold it.
Line 29.5 · The one expected to follow through
People lean on your devotion, trusting you to carry the hard thing all the way to the end. Commit to what you can truly see through and you become someone others rely on completely; promise depths you can't reach, and that same trust hardens into blame. Guard your yes carefully.
Line 29.6 · Devotion that becomes example
Across your life your commitment matures from saying yes to everything, through a stretch of stepping back and watching, into knowing exactly what is worth your whole heart. In time the steadiness of your devotion becomes something others look to. Early on you overextend; later, your discernment about what to persevere through teaches on its own.

The I Ching — Hexagram 29, The Abysmal
Gate 29 is built directly on this hexagram — the ancient oracle Human Design grew out of.
This is water doubled, one gorge of rushing water pouring into another, the sign of danger repeated until peril fills the whole landscape. The counsel is to keep an inner truth so steady that your sincerity carries you through: hold fast to your heart's purpose and let your conduct stay constant however the depths churn, and you find passage and can even guide others across. As water flows on without halting, never piling up but always pressing forward and filling each low place before it moves on, so meet repeated hardship by staying in motion, practicing your craft again and again until it becomes second nature.
Line 29.1
Danger has become habit, and you sink deeper into the pit; growing accustomed to the abyss is itself the misfortune. Lost at the bottom of the gorge, you can no longer find the way out.
Line 29.2
The pit is deep and real danger surrounds you, so do not reach for any grand rescue. Aim only for what is small and within grasp, securing modest gains step by step until the worst is behind you.
Line 29.3
Caught between one abyss and the next, every direction forward or back drops into deeper water. Since any move only sinks you further, do not struggle or act; pause, hold still, and refuse to throw yourself in.
Line 29.4
In the depth of the danger, set all ceremony aside: a single jug of wine, a bowl of rice, plain earthen vessels passed honestly through the window are enough. Stripped-down sincerity between people in hard times brings no blame in the end.
Line 29.5
The water has not yet spilled over the gorge but has risen just to the brim, and there it will settle. Do not overreach; fill only to the point where the danger levels off, and you come through without fault.
Line 29.6
Bound with cords and ropes and shut behind a hedge of thorns, you are wholly lost in the abyss and for three years cannot find the way out. Persisting in error here keeps you trapped a long, long time, and that is misfortune.
The Gene Keys — Gene Key 29
In the Gene Keys, the same energy runs a spectrum: Shadow Half-Heartedness → Gift Commitment → Siddhi Devotion.
In the Shadow of Half-Heartedness, you scatter your "yes" across too many directions, saying it out of pressure or habit and then quietly withdrawing the moment things get hard, so nothing ever takes root. The Gift of Commitment arrives when you learn to give your word fully and stay through the discomfort, and at its highest this wholehearted "yes" deepens into the Siddhi of Devotion, where you no longer choose what to commit to but simply pour yourself into life with your whole being.
