Gate 45: Gathering
The gate of the gatherer — the voice that says "I have." This is the king/queen energy of material gathering and distribution. It naturally draws resources and people together under its authority.
The six lines of Gate 45
Every gate expresses through six lines — the universal line quality coloured by this gate's specific energy. These are the line-level interpretations most apps reserve for paid readings.
Line 45.1 · Knowing the supply first
Your authority to gather and distribute rests on first knowing the resources and the people in your care from the ground up. When that quiet homework is done, your hand on what's shared feels earned and steady; skip it and you hoard or ration blindly, and the group stops trusting you to hold the supply.
Line 45.2 · The gatherer who must be called
You have an innate gift for drawing a group together around what it shares, but you can't claim the role on demand or appoint yourself to it. It works when others recognize you and ask you to lead the gathering; pushed to take charge before you're called, the natural ease sours into resentment and reluctant control.
Line 45.3 · Fairness learned the hard way
You discover how to gather and divide resources by getting the split wrong — too much to one, too little to another, watching the bonds strain. Each uneven distribution teaches you the real shape of the group's needs; your sense of fairness isn't given but earned, corrected from everything that came out lopsided.
Line 45.4 · Abundance held through bonds
Your power to gather and provide flows through the people already close to you — the inner circle you feed and who feed you. Resources move along those warm, established ties and the whole group thrives; reach past them to court strangers or distant claims and the supply scatters and the center won't hold.
Line 45.5 · The provider others look to
People look to you to make the resources stretch and keep the gathering whole, projecting onto you the role of the one who keeps everyone fed. Meet that need and you're seen as the rightful steward; fall short, or promise more than the abundance can cover, and the same dependence curdles into blame — so pledge only what you can truly deliver.
Line 45.6 · Stewardship that sets the standard
Across your life your way of gathering and distributing matures from grasping experiment into trusted stewardship, until how you hold and share resources becomes the example others follow. Early on you may overreach or pull back entirely; in time, the fairness and reach of your provision quietly teach the group what good stewardship looks like.

The I Ching — Hexagram 45, Gathering Together
Gate 45 is built directly on this hexagram — the ancient oracle Human Design grew out of.
Gathering Together marks the moment when scattered people converge into a single body. The oracle promises success when a true leader of real standing holds the center, when a worthy offering honors the bond that draws the group, and when steady correctness aims the whole gathering toward a goal worth pursuing. The Image is a lake heaped above the earth, its waters pooled and pressing to spill over, so the wise person keeps their weapons in order and readies themselves ahead of time, for wherever a crowd masses, sudden trouble can break out unannounced.
Line 45.1
Your wish to belong is honest, but your resolve will not hold to the end, so the company keeps breaking apart and re-forming in confusion; raise a plain cry for help, and a single answering clasp of the hand can turn the disorder to laughter, so go ahead without regret or shame.
Line 45.2
You are drawn into the group by a natural inner pull, not by scheming for a place, and this brings good fortune and leaves you blameless; what binds you is real sincerity, so even a small, plain offering carries more weight than a lavish one.
Line 45.3
You yearn to join but stand outside the closed circle, sighing where no advantage shows itself; move forward anyway by drawing near someone closer to the center, and though there is a touch of humiliation, no true harm follows.
Line 45.4
You labor for the whole and not for your own standing, gathering others in the ruler's name rather than your own, and only such complete, selfless good fortune carries you past blame, for the union you serve is far larger than yourself.
Line 45.5
People assemble around the rightful place you hold, yet some arrive without real trust in their hearts; keep to great, lasting, unwavering uprightness, and the lingering regret fades as their confidence is slowly won.
Line 45.6
You find yourself shut out and grieving at the very end, moved to open sighs and tears at being unable to join; this honest lament is itself the plea that clears the fault, and it leaves no lasting blame.
The Gene Keys — Gene Key 45
In the Gene Keys, the same energy runs a spectrum: Shadow Dominance → Gift Synergy → Siddhi Communion.
At its shadow frequency, Dominance is the impulse to rule from above — gathering people, resources, and attention to feed the self, mistaking control for true leadership and leaving others feeling owned rather than included. Lifted into the Gift of Synergy, that same gathering instinct turns generous, weaving individual strengths into a whole that thrives together, until at the Siddhi it dissolves entirely into Communion, where there is no longer a leader and a led but one shared field of belonging.
