Gate 48: Depth

The Well · Spleen Center

The gate of depth — the intuitive awareness of having (or lacking) adequate depth. This is the fear of inadequacy driving you toward deeper understanding. A well of knowledge that fears it isn't deep enough.

The six lines of Gate 48

Every gate expresses through six lines — the universal line quality coloured by this gate's specific energy. These are the line-level interpretations most apps reserve for paid readings.

Line 48.1 · Depth built before drawing

Your intuitive knowing only runs deep once you've done the patient study beneath it, letting the well fill before you reach for it. Offer wisdom on shallow ground and it comes up thin, and you feel the gap; let the foundation settle first, and what you draw is clear and reliable.

Line 48.2 · Innate knowing, named by others

You carry a natural depth you rarely notice in yourself, sensing what others miss without effort. It surfaces best in your own quiet and resists being summoned on cue. The right person has to recognize it and call it out; pressed to perform on demand, the well goes still.

Line 48.3 · Depth tested by doing

You find the reach and limits of your knowing by acting on it and watching what holds. Each time your intuition misses, you learn where the real depth sits and where you were only guessing. The failed reads aren't wasted; they're how your competence becomes genuinely deep.

Line 48.4 · Depth shared through trust

Your intuitive insight reaches people through bonds already in place, as those who know you draw on your depth and carry it onward. Offered into trusted relationship it lands and helps; pushed on strangers or into the wrong room, the same knowing reads as overstepping and gets waved off.

Line 48.5 · The depth others lean on

People project competence onto you and expect your knowing to solve what they can't, which can make you indispensable or set you up to fall. When your depth genuinely meets the problem you're trusted as a source; when it can't reach that far, the same expectation curdles into blame, so don't promise depth you haven't earned.

Line 48.6 · Depth that becomes wisdom

Across your life your knowing ripens from anxious testing into settled wisdom, until your depth is something others come to rely on. Early on you may doubt and withdraw, unsure the well is full; in time you stop straining, and the quiet competence speaks for itself.

The I Ching — Hexagram 48, The Well

Gate 48 is built directly on this hexagram — the ancient oracle Human Design grew out of.

The Judgment: a settlement can be picked up and relocated, but the well stays put — it neither runs dry nor overflows, and everyone comes and goes drawing from the same steady source. The danger lies in falling short at the last moment: a rope too short to reach the water, or a bucket that shatters as it nears the rim, wasting a supply that was always reliable. The Image shows wood sinking into the depths to bring water up; one who leads should hearten people in their labor and urge them to sustain one another.

Line 48.1

The well is choked with mud, so no one drinks and even the wildlife has stopped coming. A person who lets themselves go stagnant and untended slips out of use, and life simply flows around them.

Line 48.2

Down at the bottom the water is clear, but it reaches only the fish, and the jug is cracked so the water drains away. Genuine ability is squandered when it is spent on trifles or left in disrepair, never rising to those who could be nourished by it.

Line 48.3

The well has been dredged clean and the water runs fresh, yet still no one comes to drink — a sorrow, because this could refresh anyone. When someone capable is passed over, the loss falls on them and on all who might have been served.

Line 48.4

The well is being relined with stone, set back in good order. Stepping back to repair and steady yourself, even when it interrupts what you give to others, is sound work and carries no fault.

Line 48.5

A clear, cold spring rises in the well, fresh and fit to drink. The worth is fully here and at its best — but it has to actually be drawn and shared before it does any good.

Line 48.6

The well is drawn from without limit and left open so all may reach it; this is its purpose fully met, and it brings the greatest good fortune. Generosity that holds nothing back is the well made complete.

The Gene Keys — Gene Key 48

In the Gene Keys, the same energy runs a spectrum: Shadow Inadequacy → Gift Resourcefulness → Siddhi Wisdom.

In the shadow of inadequacy, a quiet voice insists you'll never know enough to act, leaving you frozen at the edge of the deep well of your own potential — yet the moment you stop waiting to feel ready and simply meet what's in front of you, that same depth becomes resourcefulness, the gift of trusting that whatever a situation needs is already rising up from within you. Carried to its fullest, this knowing dissolves the gap between not-enough and more-than-enough into wisdom: the serene recognition that the well has no bottom, and that life itself moves through you with all the answers it will ever require.
