The six lines of Gate 34

Line 34.1 · Power grounded before it moves
Your raw strength wants to surge, but it carries real authority only when it rests on a solid sense of yourself first. Take the time to know your own capacity from the inside, and the power moves with conviction; act before that footing is set and you push hard in directions that don't hold.

You learn the real shape of your strength by throwing it into things and seeing what gives way. Each effort that fails or overreaches teaches you exactly where your power lands and where it's wasted. The bruises aren't setbacks — they're how this gate's force gets calibrated into something dependable.
Line 34.4 · Strength devoted to the few
Your power is fiercely loyal and works best aimed at the people and commitments you actually care about. It mobilizes for the bonds right in front of you, not abstract causes or strangers. Spread it across everyone, or pour it where there's no real connection, and the force scatters into restlessness and burnout.
Line 34.5 · The strong one others lean on
People sense your power and expect you to carry, fix, and push things through, and that pull can make you a pillar or grind you down. When your strength meets the moment you become someone others rely on; when it can't, the same expectation turns to resentment — so guard your energy and answer only your own response.
Line 34.6 · Power that becomes self-evident
Across your life your raw force matures from restless busyness into a strength that no longer has to prove itself. Early on you may throw your power everywhere and exhaust it; later you stand in it quietly, and your sheer presence does what striving once tried to. In time, your steadiness becomes the demonstration.

The I Ching — Hexagram 34, The Power of the Great
Gate 34 is built directly on this hexagram — the ancient oracle Human Design grew out of.
Great power is gathered here, and what makes it sound is perseverance: strength that holds to what is right endures, while force pressed against principle falls apart. The image is thunder rolling above heaven — vast energy on the move, which the wise person governs by never taking a single step that breaks with what is fitting, refusing to let sheer might stand in for being right.
Line 34.1
Power gathered in the toes — all forward urge and no ground beneath it. To press ahead from this lowest place brings misfortune, since raw drive without a footing cannot reach its aim.
Line 34.2
To hold steady brings good fortune. Here genuine strength meets no resistance and advances in right measure, moving with the moment instead of straining past it.
Line 34.3
The small-minded spend their strength on display; the wise carry it as if it weighed nothing. To charge each obstacle like a ram driving its head at a fence only snares the horns and leaves you stuck fast.
Line 34.4
Steady persistence carries you through and regret melts away: the fence parts without a fight. The strength now works like the axle of a great cart, bearing the whole load and rolling on — power voiced through steadiness rather than collision.
Line 34.5
Release the stubborn, butting drive as lightly as letting a goat slip from your hands in open country. There is nothing to regret, for strength held this easily no longer needs guarding or forcing.
Line 34.6
The ram has driven into the hedge and can move neither back nor on, its horns held fast. At first no path will serve; yet to see the bind clearly and stay still is what at last turns the way toward good fortune.
