Gate 35: Change
The gate of change — the hunger for all of life's experiences. This is the jack-of-all-trades energy that craves variety and change. Progress comes through embracing many different experiences.
The six lines of Gate 35
Every gate expresses through six lines — the universal line quality coloured by this gate's specific energy. These are the line-level interpretations most apps reserve for paid readings.
Line 35.1 · Hunger built on solid ground
Your appetite for new experience runs deepest when it rests on something you actually understand. Study the terrain first and your reach for the next thing carries real weight. Chase novelty before that foundation is laid and the hunger turns restless and hollow, moving for the sake of moving.
Line 35.2 · The natural appetite for more
An innate pull toward fresh experience lives in you, easy and unforced, but it surfaces best in your own rhythm rather than on demand. The right call draws your hunger forward into something real. Pushed to keep chasing the new on cue, you stall and the appetite goes quiet.
Line 35.3 · Learning which experiences were worth it
You feed your hunger by diving in, and plenty of those experiences simply don't deliver what you hoped. That's not waste — each one that fell flat teaches you which kind of new is actually worth pursuing. Your read on what counts as progress is earned the hard way, and all the more trustworthy for it.
Line 35.4 · New experience through trusted bonds
The fresh experiences that truly move you tend to arrive through people you already know and trust. Your hunger for what's next is best fed inside warm, established connection. Strike out alone toward novelty with no one beside you, and even the most exciting change can leave you flat and untethered.
Line 35.5 · Expected to bring the next thing
People look to you to bring the new, the movement, the way forward, and that projection can carry you or weigh you down. When your hunger genuinely opens a door for others, you're seen as someone who moves things ahead. When the promised change doesn't come, the same hope sours into blame — so be honest about what you can deliver.
Line 35.6 · Hunger that learns to discern
Over your life your appetite for experience shifts from restless seeking toward seasoned judgment. Early on you taste everything, sometimes recklessly. In time you step back and watch, and eventually you become someone whose sense of which changes matter is trusted — progress measured not by how much you chase, but by what proves worth wanting.

The I Ching — Hexagram 35, Progress
Gate 35 is built directly on this hexagram — the ancient oracle Human Design grew out of.
Progress is the sunrise: light climbs clear above the earth and warms all it touches, so a deserving servant is welcomed by a generous ruler, showered with gifts and received in audience again and again within a single day. The Image is the bright sun ascending over the land, and its counsel is to turn that light inward, polishing your own clarity and virtue until your conduct shines as openly as the day. Real advancement comes not from pushing upward but from worth made luminous, which draws recognition toward you.
Line 35.1
You move to advance and are turned back or distrusted; stay firm and upright, take no offense at the missing confidence, and hold a calm generosity even when reward is withheld — meet the delay honestly and no blame falls on you.
Line 35.2
Advancing now is shadowed by sorrow and unease, but keep to what is correct and good fortune will come; the blessing reaches you from an ancestral source, a maternal forebear above — support arrives indirectly when you remain steadfast.
Line 35.3
Everyone around you places their trust in you and shares your aim, so the earlier hesitation falls away and all cause for regret dissolves; carried by common confidence, you advance together without misgiving.
Line 35.4
To push ahead grasping and timid, hoarding like a burrowing rodent, is a furtive and unstable course; however correct you imagine yourself, clinging to advancement this way keeps you in real danger.
Line 35.5
Settled in the place of true progress, set aside all anxiety over gain and loss; whatever you undertake turns out well, and fretting over the outcome only clouds the good fortune already moving in your favor.
Line 35.6
Pressing forward with horns lowered to strike is fit only for correcting faults within your own household or city; turned there it succeeds and the danger passes into good fortune, but used to subdue others it stays perilous, and even justified force here ends in some humiliation.
The Gene Keys — Gene Key 35
In the Gene Keys, the same energy runs a spectrum: Shadow Hunger → Gift Adventure → Siddhi Boundlessness.
In its Shadow, Hunger is the restless ache that mistakes the next experience for fulfillment, chasing thrill after thrill yet never feeling truly satisfied; transmuted into the Gift, that same drive matures into Adventure—a willingness to move through life with curiosity and learn from each experience rather than grasp at it. At its highest, the Siddhi of Boundlessness arrives when the seeking finally rests: every experience is recognized as already complete, and the soul that once hungered discovers it was always part of an endless, ever-unfolding whole.
