Deliverance · Heart/Ego Center

The gate of aloneness — the willpower to provide for the community while needing solitude. This ego energy makes bargains: I will provide for you, but I need my alone time. Balancing tribal responsibility with personal space.

The six lines of Gate 40

Every gate expresses through six lines — the universal line quality coloured by this gate's specific energy. These are the line-level interpretations most apps reserve for paid readings.

Line 40.1 · Strength built on rest

Your capacity to provide for others rests on a foundation of genuine recovery — you have to know your own limits before you can carry the load. When you've studied where your energy ends and protected your solitude, your willpower is dependable; skip that groundwork and you overextend until there's nothing left to give.

Line 40.2 · The provider who needs space

You have a natural, almost reflexive strength others lean on, but it only renews when you're left alone. The need is real and deserves respect, not summoning on demand — push for your help on someone else's schedule and the well runs dry, while honored solitude restores the willingness to give.

Line 40.3 · Learning where the bonds break

You discover how much you can give, and to whom, by overcommitting, burning out, and pulling back to repair. Each strained relationship shows you where the healthy line actually sits. The lesson isn't failure but calibration — your reliable strength is built from every time you gave too much and had to recover.

Line 40.4 · Giving inside the family

Your strength flows naturally to the people you belong to — your tribe, your household, the bonds already established. You provide best where there's real warmth and mutual care. Stretched toward strangers or those who only take, your generosity drains fast; offered within trusted connection, it sustains everyone, including you.

Line 40.5 · The strength people expect

Others project the role of provider onto you and count on your willpower to come through, which can make you indispensable or quietly overload you. Deliver, and you're seen as the dependable backbone; fall short, and the same expectation curdles into resentment — so protect your reserves and only commit to what you can truly sustain.

Line 40.6 · Strength that knows its limits

Over the long arc of your life your willpower matures from proving yourself into a settled sense of when to give and when to withdraw. Early on you may overspend learning the cost; later you become the example others trust — providing fully precisely because you've finally learned to honor your own retreat.

The I Ching — Hexagram 40, Deliverance

Gate 40 is built directly on this hexagram — the ancient oracle Human Design grew out of.

Deliverance is the breaking of tension after a hard passage — thunder cracks, rain falls, and what was bound up is finally let loose. Once the trouble has passed, the counsel is to come back to ordinary life and not press for more; but wherever something still needs setting right, attend to it quickly and be done. As the storm clears the air, the thoughtful person pardons errors and releases old wrongs rather than holding them.

Line 40.1

At the very beginning, just as the strain lets go, there is nothing yet to do and nothing to answer for. Stay still, say little, and let the relief settle on its own.

Line 40.2

As a hunter takes three foxes in the field and is given a yellow-shafted arrow, you clear out the sly, hidden things working against you and hold to a straight, balanced course. Stay true to it and fortune follows.

Line 40.3

To carry a load on your back yet ride in a fine carriage is to claim a place you have not earned — and it tempts thieves toward you. Showing off what you cannot back up invites loss, and however right you feel, it ends in disgrace.

Line 40.4

Free yourself of the wrong company, releasing the small, clinging ties that hold you back like a grip on your own toe. Once they are gone, the one who truly belongs with you arrives, and that person can be trusted.

Line 40.5

When a person of real worth can cut themselves loose from what entangles them, things go well. The proof is in the parting itself: the petty fall away of their own accord, and your sincerity makes the break plain to all.

Line 40.6

Like a prince taking aim at a hawk perched on a high wall and bringing it down, you remove the last stubborn obstacle with one clean, decisive shot. When the moment is ripe and you strike true, everything moves in your favor.

The Gene Keys — Gene Key 40

In the Gene Keys, the same energy runs a spectrum: Shadow Exhaustion → Gift Resolve → Siddhi Divine Will.

In the Shadow frequency of Exhaustion, the will is spent fighting against life — saying yes when the body means no, propping up obligations long after the energy to meet them has drained, until burnout forces a collapse. As that pattern is felt and honored rather than overridden, it tempers into the Gift of Resolve: a clean inner strength that knows when to give and when to draw a boundary, conserving its power for what truly matters; and at its highest pitch the personal will dissolves entirely into the Siddhi of Divine Will, where there is no longer anyone left to push or resist, only life moving through a body that has fully surrendered to it.
