Line 42.1 · Growth from a studied base
Before you can carry something all the way through, you need to understand the cycle you're entering — what it asks, how long it runs, where it ends. When you've grounded yourself in that, your follow-through holds to the finish; rush in without it and you stall midway, unable to complete what you started.
Line 42.2 · The finisher called into the cycle
You have a natural gift for completion that works best when you're left alone to ride a cycle to its end on your own rhythm. The right moment draws this out of you; being pushed to start something before you feel the pull only breaks your momentum and leaves things half-grown.
Line 42.3 · Learning to finish by faltering
You discover how to see things through by entering cycles that don't complete — abandoned projects, expansions that collapse before maturing. Each unfinished attempt teaches you when to stay and when to let go, until you develop a hard-won instinct for which growth is actually worth carrying to the end.
Line 42.4 · Growth shared through connection
The cycles you complete ripple outward to the people close to you, and their support is what lets you finish. Your expansion gains real traction through trusted bonds rather than solo striving; cut off from that network, even a worthy cycle loses the warmth and backing it needs to fully mature.
Line 42.5 · The completion others rely on
People look to you to bring things to fruition, expecting you to deliver growth that benefits everyone. When you finish the cycle well you're trusted as the one who makes things flourish; when a cycle stalls outside your control, that same reliance can turn to blame — so commit only to what you can truly see through.
Line 42.6 · The example of full cycles
Across your life you move from forcing growth before its time toward an unhurried trust in how cycles complete themselves. Having lived through enough beginnings and endings, you become a quiet model of patience — someone who knows that real increase can't be rushed, and shows others how to let things finish.

The I Ching — Hexagram 42, Increase
Gate 42 is built directly on this hexagram — the ancient oracle Human Design grew out of.
Increase rewards those who set out toward a goal; this is a time when blessing pours from the high down to the low, so that even great ventures—crossing the widest river among them—turn out well. Above is wind, below is thunder, and the two strengthen each other as they move: seeing the model of this, the wise person hurries toward every good they notice to make it their own, and the moment they find a flaw in themselves, they let it go. Real increase begins when those at the top give of themselves to raise everyone beneath them.
Line 42.1
This is the moment to take on something great and difficult. Strong support is flowing toward you, so even an ambitious move turns out well, and no one faults you for reaching high from a humble place—so long as the aim is truly worth it.
Line 42.2
Increase comes to you from outside, so firmly given that nothing could turn it aside—not ten pairs of oracle tortoises, not any counter-argument. Hold steady and stay true, and direct this good fortune upward toward its source, toward heaven or the ruler, and it lasts.
Line 42.3
Even loss and hard events can enrich you when you meet them honestly. Keep to a sincere middle course, state your case plainly, and stand on the proof of your good faith as if holding an official seal that vouches for you.
Line 42.4
Hold the balanced center, and your judgment will be trusted. Serve as a faithful go-between, and those in power will follow your lead—enough to back you even in a matter as weighty as moving an entire community to new ground.
Line 42.5
When your heart is genuinely kind and seeks nothing back, you need not even ask whether things will go well. The highest blessing comes, because others see the goodness in you and return it with kindness of their own.
Line 42.6
Here increase turns into loss. One who only takes and gives nothing back enriches no one, and may be struck by a blow from outside. A grasping heart that will not stay steady, that lets its purpose drift, draws misfortune to itself.
